As the sun began to set over the Washington Monument on a Monday, the grounds became a peaceful gathering for wellness and community building. State of the Party hosted “Sunset Yoga” to bring the D.C. community together to promote peace, community, and physical and emotional wellness. The event created a beautiful setting for attendees to relax, connect, and practice yoga. State of the Party is a DC-based social club founded by Grace B. Kalere, who also happens to be a Howard University student.

Brittany, a 36-year-old government employee, describes Sunset Yoga as a great way to step outside of her comfort zone and prioritize herself. “I had a really great day of rest and recharging, which I really needed,” said Brittany. “This was just the perfect opportunity to start my week off on the right foot.”

Events like Sunset Yoga further highlight the growing importance of free, accessible wellness spaces in the DMV. For Brittany, seeing people who looked like her made the experience feel even more meaningful. As the sun began to set, yoga enthusiasts rolled up their mats, gathered their belongings, and headed home with smiles. “It is my wish that everybody finds something that they can resonate with,” said Brittany.
