The start of UDC’s academic year began with an empowering Opening 2026 Convocation. The event convened faculty, staff, students, Board of Trustees, and special guests to celebrate the university’s success, academics, and achievements. Students from all levels, clubs such as Greek Life, and UDC Student Ambassadors welcomed the audience with a march displaying custom-designed banners that celebrate UDC’s diversity and activities.

The UDC Chorale gave a reflective performance, singing a different but inspiring rendition of the national anthem. Board of Trustees Vice Chair Dr. Carolyn B. Rudd, spoke about the importance of starting the academic year strong. “The Convocation gives us an opportunity to begin the academic year together and reaffirm our shared commitment to our students, our university, and to the people of the District of Columbia,” said Rudd.
UDC President, Dr. Maurice D. Edington focused on the need for students to have access to succeed not only at the university, but in life. “At UDC, we prepare the workforce for our city’s needs. We conduct research that address the challenges facing DC communities, and build partnerships that create opportunities throughout the District.”

Other event speakers included William W. Hare, Associate Dean of Land Grant Programs, and Che Axum Cuage, Director and Farm Manager. They highlighted UDC’s resilient food system, which teaches and brings together community services such as the Van Ness Urban Food Hubs in Wards 1 and 3, and the East Capital Urban Farms in Wards 6 and 7.
One message was clear throughout the Convocation: UDC will remain an institution that serves the District, and is committed to equipping students with the tools to survive and become accomplished individuals in the world. The Convocation is available at https://www.udc.edu/opening-convocation/.
