Witness Artistry: A Look Into the 2026 UDC Art Show

“Witness” brings together a powerful collection of student work exploring observation, identity and lived experience. Through diverse perspectives and mediums, the exhibition invites viewers to reflect on how we see and interpret the world around us.

Art has a way of making us feel all sorts of emotions, too sad, too happy, and more complex. But it can also stop us in our tracks and help us think more deeply. This spring, students in the University of the District of Columbia art program invite all attendees from the campus community to explore the 2026 annual juried student art show titled “Witness”.

The exhibit, Witness, is a collection of student voices, perspectives, and shared/lived experiences. This specific imagery is featured within the show’s expectations, and all share a common theme of observation. How you view the world. Displaying a diverse experience from different lenses, allowing these students to explore together and what it means to be a Witness in life. Each piece in the exhibit is carefully chosen and displays a strong sense of creativity and technical skill, as shown to the public.

The exhibit opens on April 8th, 2026, from 6:30-8 p.m. in classroom A-12 of Building 42 on the UDC Van Ness Campus. This is an opportunity to hear the stories behind the paintings, drawings, and/or photos taken, and to understand the inspiration and meaning. This exhibition will remain on display through April 30th, so you will still have time to view it. Also gives us a chance to connect with the creative community for once and view other people’s experiences on campus.

Events like Witness remind us that art is available to everyone and can give us something to experience together. It builds connection, sparks conversation, and allows us to view other people’s perspectives. At UDC, art students are creating these pieces so others can reflect, think, and explore the world through their lens. But also give a piece of themselves and their identity for the public to explore. And I hope everyone can see this gallery and these true works of art.

Update: the art gallery is receiving great and positive traction. Many students are posting about the art gallery on social media. Have a look at some of the art that was posted.
